Do you LOVE to pack? If you are like most people then the answer is probably “no.” Here are some tips to help make it less painful.
Having a professional mover pack your items will be more expensive because of the added time and materials for their crews, so here are some tips if you plan to do the packing yourself to make sure your move goes as smooth as possible.
Planning Is Important
Getting a jump on the packing process as early as possible will make your whole move go better. To help it from becoming too overwhelming, it is good to create a plan. Then, take a room-by-room approach so you can attack this project in small doses versus trying to cram all of the packing into one day.
Just like when you tried cramming all of your school studies into one day, packing all your items in one day will likely cause some stress.
Having The Right Tools Is Important
Like with most things in life, you need the proper tools to be successful and moving is no different. To help have a stress-free move you will need the proper packing supplies. You do not want to end up at your new residence and then learn your personal treasures were destroyed along the way.
Moving supplies you will need include: Boxes of various sizes, Tape/shipping tape, Scissors, Box cutters, Sticker labels (if you aren’t using masking tape), Sharpie permanent markers for labeling, Colored markers or colored stickers for room color coding, Packing material, such as bubble wrap, packing paper, newsprint or enough of your own linens.
Bonus Tips
- The heavier the item you are moving, the smaller the box should be.
- Do not fold boxes at the top or bottom. Instead, it is best to tape every box, which will help the box from breaking out at the bottom.
Organization Is Important
Sure you are wanting to get the packing done as quickly as possible, but taking a little time on the front-end will alleviate stress on the back-end of your move. It is a good idea to pack room-by-room to be sure to keep boxes from the same room together and then label them. This will make it easier to determine what is what, and will also let your movers know how they should pack them onto the truck and where they go once you arrive to your new destination.
Labeling Is Important
Not labeling your boxes properly could cause some major chaos with your home move. It helps you know what items are in what boxes so you are not having to open up a bunch of boxes in hopes of finding an item.
If all of this sounds like a pain and you do not want to do it, then you can always have a professional mover do it for you.
