How early should you book a mover? Simple answer, as soon as possible.
It doesn’t matter if you’re moving across the country or your new home is just a few miles away; it is always a good idea to book as soon as possible to make sure you get the best possible movers.
Generally speaking, the best movers won’t have much availability a few weeks out or even a month in advance. So if you wait, then there’s a good chance the best moving companies in your area won’t be available when you need them.
For most moving companies, the peak moving season will be the summer because it coincides with a very busy home-buying real estate season… and it’s warmer.
When you’ll be staying within the same state of your current residence, but you will be moving to a new city, you will want to book at least three months in advance, if possible. Most of these moves require at least an entire day for loading/unloading and travel, and there are fewer companies who offer these moves so your options are more limited.
If you are planning to move from one state to another it may require even more lead time because, again, even fewer companies offer these interstate services so to get the best movers you want to book as soon as possible.
As a rule of thumb, the moment you know you are moving you should start reaching out to moving companies to get a coordinator to assess your items to give you a quote. It will be easier to pull the trigger on a moving company when your move date gets finalized if you have already had a coordinator assess the property and develop a timeline for a successful move.
In addition, the size of your move will play a factor in determining how long and how much your move will cost since moving a studio apartment won’t take as long as a 4-bedroom house with a piano, artwork and sculptures.
Regardless of where you plan to move, it’s always a good idea to plan ahead and avoid booking movers for the same day you have to be out of your home.
You cannot plan for weather, traffic, or other unforeseen circumstances. These roadblocks can get in the way and cause you serious stress if you book movers for the same day you have to be out of your home.
Make sure to give yourself a day, a few days, or a week, just in case something happens.
