It can be a great time to take a personal inventory of all of your belongings while getting ready for a move, and it can also be a great opportunity to purge some things. There are likely items around your house that you just don’t use anymore so might as well make a little cash on them and not pay to have them moved.
Items You May Want To Sell Before Moving
Old Appliances: If you are in situation where you have older appliances that are yours, then consider it might be more cost effective to sell them for a little bit of cash versus paying to have them moved. They are heavy and sometimes difficult to move, depending on the piece, which makes them more expensive to pack and transport. So, it’s a math game really. Is it worth hauling an older appliance when it might have a short life left or get some cash from it and buy new. This would save some time, energy, and potentially money in the long term.
Old Furniture: If you are not attached to an old piece of furniture, then it might be wise to consider selling it before your big move. You might be able to sell it for some money, which would help you recoup the costs when you go to buy a new piece.
Clothes You Do Not Wear: We all hang on to clothing for too long. Let’s face it, if you did not wear a piece of clothing during the past year, then it might be best to just discard it. You do not want to pay money to move something you will never wear again. If you have some clothes hanging around the closet for when you drop a few sizes (ha… we all do), then do not let that negativity stare you in the face anymore and just give it away or toss it. Would use the same consideration for shoes, purses, jackets, jewelry, and bridal wear.
If You Do Not Use It, Then Lose It: Go through the old toys, books, electronics, and if you did not even realize you had them, then you might consider getting rid of them. It would not be a bad idea to have a pre-move garage sale, or possibly give them away to charity. Many libraries will accept old books, which will ensure they are not wasted. Plus, if you have ever carried a box of books before, then you know they are pretty heavy so taking your entire archive could get pricey.
Should It Stay Or Should It Go?
Here are a few questions that might help you decided whether or not to keep an item or discard it.
Does it work? If yes, then possibly you still move it.
Would it cost more to move it than to replace it? If it’s going to cost you more to move it and has no sentimental value, then just replace it later.
Do you use it? If the answer is no, then consider getting rid of it. If it still works, then possibly someone else will get some joy out of the item.
There are a ton of places online where you can sell items, such as Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Amazon, ect… so it might be an opportunity to help pay for some of your move while de-cluttering your life a bit.
If you want to get rid of something, but you cannot find any takers, then consider donating the items to places like Goodwill, Salvation Army or other charities. There are even some organizations that will come to your property to pick up certain items so a quick Google search could save you time and money.
