One of the most valuable things you can do when getting ready to move is properly labeling your belongings and creating an inventory list. By doing this, it will make both unpacking the moving truck and unpacking each box much easier and efficient for you.
To be honest, it’s probably not the most fun thing you will ever do unless you love organizing things. The other part of labeling is listing contents. Though, if you take a little more time at the front end to organize the labeling and take an inventory, it will save you a lot of headaches (and possibly some money) when you are unloading the items at your new space.
Here are a few things to consider to help out with creating labels and doing inventory.
Labels:
Find lots of colorful stickers. Make sure they’re bigger so they can be recognized easily.
Assign each room at destination a specific color, then make sure to make note somewhere the color designation for each room.
As you pack, each box or container gets a colored sticker on top and on three sides, at least. Make sure the label matches the new room. This will ensure that no matter which direction the box is facing you, or the movers, will be able to easily discern the room the box goes into.
Focus the labels on the rooms they will be moving into, not the rooms they are moving from. If you’re not around, then whoever is moving the item(s) won’t need much direction to get sure they are placed in the appropriate spot.
It can be extremely helpful to put the appropriately colored sticker on the door next each room. Make sure to mark each entryway door since movers could be coming from different directions.
By using a color-coding system for your move, even if a box is put in the wrong room (it can still happen) then you will easily be able to locate it.

Inventory:
This won’t be for everyone, but if you’re the ultimate organizer, then create a master list and label each container with a number and inventory each item that’s in that box. Use a permanent marker in case it happens to rain that day.
Using an excel spreadsheet can be helpful since can color code each of the boxes and organize it.
If this just isn’t for you, then we would suggest at least identifying the contents of each box on the box. Again, would use a permanent marker in case it rains or rubs off.
